    About me (the guy behind the cryptic three T's):
    my name is Tom David Frey. I'm half Swiss and half German and have lived in many fantastic places, from the United States to Israel. Somehow cool.
    My age? Well, it rapidly changes. But you can surely do the math: I was born in 1992, somewhere in a small town in mid-Rhineland-Palatinate.
    Now the relevant things you came here for: I have a strong passion for cameras and drones. I got my first Sony at the age of six and started my own business when I turned 18 (don't ever let people tell you that you will not succeed; Live your dreams!).
    Nowadays, I'm shooting videos in many countries. I have private clients as well as major companies I'm working with, f.e. Netflix. And everyone knows that one, right?
    But, more importantly, I love to fly and shoot (video) with my drones. I've flown in so many countries already (China, Switzerland, the USA, Spain, Iceland, Israel, Germany, and plenty more) and love to explore the world from above in all its beauty.
    That's why my main business is all about drones. I capture the world from above. And I share my experiences, knowledge, and the best new inventions with you.
    Drones and cameras excite me so much that I put a lot of time and hard work into creating my videos. And I love that you guys appreciate them!
    Now, join me on my adventures and subscribe to my channel.
    Stay tuned and fly safe!
    --------------------
    The fine print quickly summed up 💻
    Some of the links above are so named "affiliate links". By using those, I can get a small provision for purchases you guys make. That way, I can stay true to you because I don't need companies to pay me for creating videos. I'm independent and loyal to you - the best audience!
    Therefore, if you purchase your gear through my links, I can keep up the honest work. 👏
    The videos on my channel are property of Tom David Frey. Duplicating and re-uploading them without my written permission is prohibited. Sorry, guys, but that's necessary. I work hard on my content and somehow need to make a living. Maybe instead share my videos, but spreading the link or embedding them to your websites or forums. But please, don't steal my work. 😎
    By law, I have to mark my video as a "commercial." I herewith do so: this video is a commercial. Though I promise to be honest to you, my audience, all of the time. I like nothing less than fake reviews and videos that spread half-truths just for the financial gain of someone. I believe that being honest to you is much worthier in the long run than make quick money by spreading fake information. Truth rules! Don't you believe me? I already had to give up on two promising cooperations because the companies found my videos to be too honest. I call that my occupational risk. 🦾

    They should have made the controller compatible with all their drones. . . . now that would be worth the money.

    • @TomsTechTime
      @TomsTechTime  5 лет назад +5

      Yes, that's true. I wish it was compatible with all of them.
      But because different drones use different transmission technologies (from WiFi to Lightbridge to OcuSync to OcuSync 2.0) that's probably hard to do.
      But for owners of a Mavic 2 this controller is a big step forward and super useful!

      Tom's Tech Time Occusync 2.0 is backwards compatible with Occusync 1.0 on a hardware level, adding WiFi isn’t a big deal and would have been very cheap, could have either put a physical switch on the side to switched the Radio from SDR based (Occusync) to WiFi based. As for Lightbridge I understand them not adding that, DJI will phase out Lightbridge in favor for Occusync.
      Also Occusync is cheap to build as it is SDR based and can use off the shelf parts with custom firmware and software, Infact probably as cheap to make and validate as WiFi.
      Lightbridge was genuinely expensive as it was a completely in house solution and DjI even custom rolled hardware for it, that’s one of the big reasons why everything will soon be Occusync or WiFi...cost effective
      DJI is obviously doing this intentionally for reasons of greed I think. They pretend not compatible but any hardware hacker knows after tearing it apart that it is.

    • @Honeypot-x9s
      @Honeypot-x9s 5 лет назад +1

      Photomind absolutely. I can see 2 versions of the future..
      1. All DjI Drones have Occusync variants (smaller drones mate have a Occusync Air/Lite system)
      2. All drones being Occusync based for higher end or and WiFi for midranged and lower end.
      Sad reality is All Occusync is is SDR based system (Software Defined Radio) so it’s very cheap to make make and validate, probably similar to using WiFi. Baffles me why DjI hasn’t started pushing all drones to Occusync tech. The phase out from Lightbridge began about 2 years go...

  • @nbamford03
    @nbamford03 5 лет назад +3

    Toms Tech Time , you really should state that you got the unit free for review. This is a re-imagining of the CrystalSky, about the same price (£600). The downside is you only get one SD slot with the controller. To say it works at -20 might be true, but your battery performance will suffer in the cold, it's only a LiPo after all and it needs those extra milliamps to power a 1000 NIT screen.
    I bought a CrystalSky and am interested to see if DJI continue to support it with upgrades or if this takes over - and potential buyers should be interested too, because if they don't then the chances are this controller will be out dated in 12 months. The upside to the CrystalSky is that you can use it with more than just the Mavic 2, handy for those of us who have to pay for our equipment.

    Thanks for the review, though a couple points to consider. Not sure about your objectivity, seems very slanted towards a DJI marketing video, and 2) Would've been nice to see more of a comparison of the brightness of the screen and size, since that is the number 1 selling point.

    Hi Tom, you make really good videos, clear and easy to understand so people can build their knowledge. I wonder if I could ask you a question about the Smart Controller, linked to maps. When I got my first drone it was a Spark, I used iOS and Litchi, with Google Maps. Now I have upgraded to a Mavic Zoom and have a Smart controller, I’m super happy with everything apart from one thing, the Maps. When I’m in the DJI go4 app to do waypoints and such like the maps are really poor, very outdated and not very detailed or clear for planning missions. Is there a way to use Google maps on the smart controller? If there is please share it as my experience with litchi set the bar with the maps, now I have a better drone and controller but poor maps😀
    Thanks Jason (UK)

    If the app locks up or crashes, can you reboot the screen without shutting off the remote? The Phantom 4 Pro + has this problem. If your Android crashes, you must reboot the entire controller mid-flight. This forces your Phantom to RTH while you reboot. Hopefully, this controller allows you to reboot your Android but STILL allow you to control your aircraft during this reboot.

    Hi Tom. Can you suggest me a pair of gloves to use in winter with drones?

    Won't fit in my two hard cases (which I love) like my IPad Mini4 does. I have had good luck with a hood when necessary and use sometimes for hours at a time. Thanks for the review.

    Thanks for the review Mr. Tom, 2 questions, 1. I think the screen size is too small to have fun. Would the bigger crystalsky screen with the stupid controller will be a better choice? Can i connect the smart controller to crystalsky bigger screen? ( that sound super stupid but i do want a bigher screen) 2. When the app crash, doest the controls keep on working or do i need to count on auto come home feature?

    What about maps? Live GPS maps or do you have to do the offline download before you fly? Or can you connect to your phone's WiFi hotspot?

      I have the same question. I know you can connect it to your phone’s WiFi hotspot, but will that give you the live map or do you still have to download maps in advance?

    One thing you didn’t talk about that I was dealing with today is heat. On a hot day a phone will dim the screen to the point that it is unusable
    and presumably, that won’t happen with this. That is huge in the summer. Also, how does it work with polarizing sun glasses?

    Is there a way to change (increase) the resolution and bit rate of the video cached in the Controller’s SD card. So in case the drone crashes into sea, we still have a usable copy.

    Hi the smart controller has the battery in it - when continually charging the whole unit - how long will it last? Does it mean you then then have to throw the unit away?????

    A site question here, but can you tell me the case you use in the video? I am awaiting delivery of my smart controller and none of the cases I looked at support the smart controller but rather just the normal controller. Thanks for the review though Tom.

    Does the DJI smart controller fit into the carrying case they advertise on their storefront? I couldn't really tell. How about the Pgytech case? I didn't actually see the smart controller being removed from it.
    Thanks!

    It's compatible with the Mavic 2 Enterprise, but you need the DJI Pilot App, so I have to load this as a third party app on the remote ?

    Hello, I have a mavic air 2 and the dji smart controller I have a problem, I cannot find the operation and the setting on the dji smart controller for the gimbal so I can actually climb up and down on the wheel left and I thought the right thumbwheel also worked to steer right to left and it doesn't work, maybe there is a trick, thanks.

    YES, probably the industry professionals will buy this, cause after all it could be a write off for them and they would get more use out of it.. HOWEVER, at this price tag, that's all who would be buying it! I think if the price tag was around $350- $400, DJI might have a better chance on selling many more to the drone hobbyists. Too Expensive and most of us will probably just stick with our phones or tablets. Unless of course if you just have $649 laying around and can't think of another way to use the money to spend on it. I'll stick to the iPhone XS for now.

      Exactly. If this was $350 every Mavic 2 pro owner would buy one. Instead, only rich people and industry professionals will get one.

    Thanks for the video, Tom. I’m going to pass, though. The small Crystal Sky is $100 (USD) cheaper.. which I could use for another battery. Plus, I’m a firm believer that your screen should be higher than the controls and not the other way around. After all, your eyes are above your hands so it’s more natural. 😐. (I see it listed as your best alternative in your description).

    My note 9 is not on the compatible list of phones to use, but I do have a great data package with hot-spot. Will this controller be the answer to my problems if I wanted to purchase a mavic pro 2 with smart controller?
